Mr. Speaker, for about 20 years, the Conservative leader has been skulking around this place without really much contact with the outside world. In the nine years that the Conservatives have been over there, they have voted against a child benefit, a dental plan, a prescription drug plan and a child care plan. Every time Canadians look to him to stand up for their interests, for fairness in Canada, he takes a seat.

Mr. Speaker, since I came to the House nine years ago, and I daresay since the Leader of the Opposition took his seat 20 years ago and proceeded to do little else, the Conservatives have voted against reducing taxes for the middle class, against the Canada child benefit, against funding child care, against dental care and against pharmacare. Every time Canadians ask the Conservatives to stand up for them, they remain seated.

Mr. Speaker, over the past nine years, the Conservative Party has a record. When it was asked to vote to lower taxes on the middle class, what did it say? No. When it was asked to approve a Canada child benefit, what did it say? No. When it was asked to vote on child care, on pharmacare and on dental care, what did it say? It said no. Why is it that when Canadians look to the Conservative Party to stand up for them, it takes a seat?

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the member for Courtenay—Alberni, because it is time to actually address this in a very serious manner. There are 338 members of the chamber. It is not healthy for any single one of us to be forced to vote on billion-dollar items for 30 straight hours. It is not healthy for anyone, and there are members of the House with health conditions, issues that quite predictably make their families, friends and constituents anxious because they should not be here voting for 30 consecutive hours, forced by the Leader of the Opposition and an obstructive, toxic force across the way. That is not okay. Someone could be seriously harmed by that. I used to be the chief government whip, and the welfare of the members was very important to me, as it is to our current chief government whip and, I am sure, to all whips. The fact is that we cannot make sure the resources such as the member for Saanich—Gulf Islands was calling for, or any of the other supports that are required, are here so we can be certain all members are safe. We need members to be safe. No one sends us here to be unsafe and to enjoy unsafe working conditions. Those are unsafe working conditions. Who knew they were unsafe? The Leader of the Opposition did. He did six votes from his seat and 124 of them from a McDonald's franchise and a Conservative fundraiser.

Mr. Speaker, I salute my friend and the members from the Bloc Québécois for their constructive contribution. They are here to oppose. Sometimes they support our proposals, sometimes they reject them. However, they do not do what I criticize my friends in the official opposition of, namely using dilatory tactics that only create chaos and prevent my friend and all parliamentarians from expressing their point of view, taking a position and taking action in favour of Canadians or against something. Bills are introduced in the House so that we can debate them and vote on them. Then, we have to take positions and defend them. The fact is that this motion is being moved for this member and for all members in the House, so that this seat of democracy can work better.
